Grassland Safari Lodge
Botswana
At a glance
Grassland Safari Lodge is set on the fringes of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana’s Ghanzi District. The lodge provides a base for exploring the Kalahari through wildlife activities, cultural encounters and conservation-focused experiences, with a waterhole positioned directly in front of the property for daytime and nighttime animal viewing.
The lodge’s character is closely connected to San culture. A cultural experience with a San family can introduce guests to traditional ways of life, including walking, village activities, toolmaking and the knowledge attached to the land. The programme also offers insight into San customs, philosophy and cuisine, as well as the Naro language. This creates a more personal cultural focus than a standard wildlife stop, while keeping the experience rooted in the Kalahari environment.
Wildlife activities include morning and afternoon game drives, horseback safaris and time at the waterhole. The lodge is also associated with conservation projects involving white rhinos and predators. The Predator Project focuses on the rescue and rehabilitation of lions, leopards and African wild dogs, giving the wildlife offering a conservation element alongside game viewing. The area’s rare African wild dogs receive particular attention through this work.
Horseback safaris provide an alternative way to experience the landscape, while guided drives allow wildlife viewing at different times of day. The waterhole adds an informal viewing option close to the lodge, with the possibility of observing animal activity after dark as well as during daylight hours. Together, these activities suit travellers looking for a combination of nature, conservation and cultural learning rather than a lodge stay centred only on conventional game drives.
Grassland Safari Lodge suits visitors interested in the Central Kalahari, San heritage and wildlife rehabilitation. It can also appeal to families and small groups seeking a varied programme, provided the activities are arranged around the group’s needs. The lodge is slightly off the usual route, so the journey forms part of the experience and benefits from advance planning. Its setting and range of activities make it suitable for travellers who value time outdoors, an educational cultural exchange and close contact with the Kalahari landscape.
