Which is your preferred method of arrival?


How to get to Botswana should be one of the first things on your list to research in order to plan the order of your itinerary. Below some different methods of arrival including a list of all international airports.

Arrive via vehicle:
You can enter via vehicle at any one of the ports of entry in Botswana. The most popular entry points, include the Mamuno border in the west for arrival from Gobabis in Namibia on the Transkalahari Highway, Ramatlabama or Lobatse if travelling to Gaborone from Johannesburg in the south, Pontdrift in the east near Tuli Game Reserve and the Ngoma border in the north which offers an entry point to Botswana, arriving from Namibia's Caprivi strip. If you are travelling with a rental vehicle, please ensure you have received a cross border permit from the rental company, which you need to present to the immigration officers. Passengers travelling with their own vehicle should enquire with the AA for the latest entry requirements.

Arrive via Bus:
The only regular connection by bus to Botswana, is between Pretoria and Gaborone with the IntercapeMainliner. Pretoria/Johannesburg offer onward connections to a variety of other cities in South Africa and Namibia, although this may require a change of bus and possible overnight before the next departure. 

Arrive by road transfer:
There are regular road transfers on offer between Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe as well as Lusaka, Zambia to Kasane town and any of the accommodation in the Kasane region. It is also possible to arrange onward transfers between Kasane and Katima Mulilo; Kasane and Nata; Nata and Maun. All transfers should be booked in advance and are usually only available on a private basis.

Arrive by Plane:

Airports are listed in the order of relevance. 

MAUN AIRPORT
You fly to Maun airport if you are planning on visiting the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai, Makgadikgadi, Central Kalahari, Linyanti, Selinda, Chobe Enclave and Kwando. It is likely you have to fly via Johannesburg in South Africa which is the main hub for international airlines based in Southern Africa. From Maun you are also able to connect via charter airline to your accommodation in the above mentioned regions or collect your rental vehicle at the airport.

KASANE AIRPORT
Kasane airport is only accessible for local destinations and flights arriving from/to Johannesburg. It is most commonly used to access Chobe National Park. You can also use Kasane as a gateway to Victoria Falls and book a transfer from Kasane to either Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe or Livingstone, Zambia (duration approxiately 1 and 1.5 hours respectively dependent on border crossing. On a bad day it can take twice as long).

SIR SERETSE KHAMA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (Gaborone airport)
The capital city's airport is your point of entry, if you plan on visiting Khutse Game Reserve and from there continue to the Central Kalahari or similar. You can pick up a vehicle rental in Gaborone and make your way to your destination by car, or meet your local tour operator to start your journey. Here you can also meet onward flight connections to Maun, Francistown and Kasane (via Maun), Johannesburg and Cape Town.

FRANCISTOWN AIRPORT
Francistown is the second largest city in Botswana, and less of a tourist destination. One could however use it as a starting point, since it's the nearest point to the Tuli Block / Mashatu Game Reserve, Khama Rhino Sanctuary in Serowe, Makgadikgadi National park and lastly it serves as a stopover en-route to in Zimbabwe.
